Will someone in the Writing Centre edit/proofread my paper?
The Writing Centre exists to help students become better writers, which means that our focus is on a student's development as a writer versus identifying errors in an assignment. Accordingly, we do not proofread or edit students’ work; instead, we help students build skills and confidence by empowering their development as writers. Please see "Writing Centre Services" for more information, including an explanation of the Writing Centre's mandate.
If a student is working on an essay, he or she is most welcome to contact the Writing Centre with a specific question regarding how to do something, such as how to create a thesis statement (versus asking what the thesis statement should be), or apply APA Style rules (versus asking if the APA Style formatting is correct). If students need help in order to move forward in an individual unmarked assignment, they are welcome to book 30-minute appointments with Writing Centre staff. During the conversation, we will provide answers to questions and information that will help the student decide what changes he or she needs to make to the text. The student will continue to be the sole author of the text at all times during the appointment, which means that we won’t proofread, edit, or otherwise make changes to the text.
For more information regarding these short appointments, including booking and cancellation policies, please visit “Move forward in an individual unmarked assignment”. To book an appointment, please visit Book an Appointment.
