APA Style (7th ed.)

Please see below for the suggested order in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2020), as well as the associated page numbers where more information can be found on each section. Please note that in the case of discrepancies between the APA's recommendations and program requirements for theses or major projects, students should follow program requirements. For example, most programs will require students to include a table of contents, and where appropriate, a list of figures and/or a list of tables. Those elements usually appear starting on a new page after the abstract but before the introduction. If students are unsure of what's expected in a dissertation, thesis, or major project, they should consult their supervisor or program head.

  • Title page (pp. 30-31)
  • Abstract (p. 38; also see pp. 73-75)
  • Introduction (pp. 75-76)
  • Method (pp. 82-86 and pp. 94-102)
  • Results (pp. 86-88 and p. 103)
  • Discussion (pp. 89-90 and p. 103)
  • References (pp. 39-40 and pp. 281-309)
  • Appendices and supplemental materials (pp. 42-43)
