The Writing Centre does not advise students on how to use generative AI technologies in their assignments because we are not in a position to confirm your instructor's expectations for a particular assignment. Instead, instructors are responsible for deciding and enforcing course policies.

Here are some examples of the kind of assistance students can expect from the Writing Centre, and the kind of assistance the instructor is better positioned to provide.

The Writing Centre can help Your instructor can help
Share general information about the academic integrity policy and generative AI statement of principle at RRU. Provide specific information about their course policy and the procedures you may need to follow when using AI in course assignments.
Suggest alternative approaches to completing specific academic writing tasks without the use of generative AI where necessary. Decide whether generative AI may be used to complete a specific academic writing task and clarify where specific uses are not allowed.
Support you in your efforts to transparently reflect on and explain your own writing process to your instructor. Explain how your assignment will be evaluated, including how relevant criteria about potential AI use may be applied when reviewing your writing.

As the comparison between these different kinds of assistance shows, finding the right approach to using AI in your course will depend on your instructor's position on the topics listed above, so a conversation with them is the best way to answer your questions about your potential approach to using generative AI.

Although the Writing Centre is not able to determine whether your approach to writing aligns with your course policies on generative AI, you are welcome to talk to us about the activities involved in your writing process so we can identify strategies that best support your own goals as a writer. By helping you better understand the activities involved in the writing process, we can also help you master these activities where it is necessary for you to demonstrate your own ability to complete specific writing tasks in your assignment.
