APA Style (7th ed.)

A quotation is the use of words or phrases taken directly from another author’s work in your writing. For more information on using quotations, please see Quoting, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing. In order to avoid plagiarizing material, be sure to enclose short quotations (fewer than 40 words) within double quotation marks and cite the author, publication year, and specific location of the quotation (page or paragraph number). See Where Should I Place an In-text Citation (APA Style)? for specific direction on where to place an in-text citation in sentences with a quotation. Format a quotation of 40 words or more as a block quotation, starting the quotation on a new line and indenting the entire quotation by 1.27 cm or one-half inch (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 171). Do not use quotation marks when formatting a block quotation. For more information on block quotations, see What is the Correct Formatting in APA Style for a Block Quotation (40+ words)? and pages 272-273 in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (American Psychological Association, 2020).
